Götterdämmerung

TheRing.jpg

Fred exits. He should have punched more hippies (via The Tiger).

"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."

That's it. We're f*cked.

Update: Mourning at AOSHQ.

Update: Harsh!

No other like him shall pass this way again, or, I fear, at least in my day. It is well past the twilight of the gods, my friend, for there are no gods left. It truly is the world of men, now...

He could have at least waited until Florida had its primary. I really wanted to vote for him. Alas, I begin to believe that my suspicions about his candidacy being a mere sham, conceived in complicity with his friend McCain to torpedo the Huckster and Flipper Romney, are about to be proven true.

**sigh**

Politicians suck.

You want harsh? How about this?

He was going to win Louisiana, in spite of himself.

He had good principles, it's true, but had he ever run anything?

(Actually, this criticism works on my preferred candidate, too. Do I shake it all up and come up with Mitt? Mitt?!)

Yes, I saw that; and the hit piece about his supposed Vice Presidential ambitions as well. You know, he just might have done well in Tennessee too.

Your point?

I think the Veep stories are nonsense.

But the Louisiana story shows what natural base of support there was for the ideas -- people there actually self-organized for him.

I agree entirely. At this point, I think the math must have looked sufficiently bad - particularly financially - to make the long shot at the nomination a bad idea. I expect his mother's health played a role as well. For me, I am content to wait on Thompson's fuller explanation once he feels it is appropriate to give it; most probably once it becomes clear who is to be the Republican nominee. The man is a gentleman. I honestly believe his party has proved it does not deserve him.

I am bitterly disappointed at this outcome and am horrified by the rest of the field. If Barak Obama could convince me he takes the jihad seriously I would be prepared to say conservatives need some time in the wilderness - and the example of a principled opponent - to remember what conservatism means.
