Molly Ringwald
For some reason half my women friends are rabidly anti-Molly Ringwald. They just don't get her. And I say that as more an Ally Sheedy kind of guy (obviously). Plus, that Judd Nelson Breakfast Club detainee was just trying to disguise his true feelings (go... to... Oprah!).
Bender: Oh, this should be stunning.
Claire: 'Cause you're afraid.
Bender: Oh God, you richies are so smart, thats exactly why I'm not heavy in activities.
Claire: You're a big coward.
Brian: I'm in the math club.
Claire: You're afraid that they won't take you. You don't belong so you just have to dump all over it.
Bender: Well, it wouldn't have anything to do with you activities people being a**holes now would it?
Claire: You wouldn't know. You don't know any of us.
Bender: Well, I don't know any lepers either but I'm not gonna run out and join one of their f***in' clubs.
Andrew: Lets watch the mouth, huh?
Brian: I'm in the physics club.
Bender: Excuse me a sec. What are you babbling about?
Brian: Well, what I said was that I'm in the math club, the latin club and the physics club.
Bender: Hey, cherry, do you belong to the physics club?
Claire: Thats an academic club.
Bender: So?
Claire: So, academic clubs arent the same as other kinds of clubs.
Bender: But to dorks like him, they are. What do you guys do in your club?
Brian: In physics, well, we talk about physics... properties of physics.
Bender: So its sort of social. Demented and sad, but social, right?
"Demented and sad, but social, right?" So true. So like blogging. This Judd Nelson soundboard is handy for 80s nostalgia at the office. "Don't you EVER talk about my friends!"

I think your old man and my old man should get together and go bowling. I've noticed that the ringwald rage sydrome seems to be confined to women younger than her, and triggered by guys saying that they look like her. I think the grown woman version is hating Demi Moore. The theory I keep hearing is jealousy, but then wouldn't the hostility be directed at some huge 6 symbol or something? Molly seems nice and everything, but I should say here that I consider her to be a mere object. I didn't before, but now I've seen a picture of her on Ghost of a Flea, so I can't think of her as a real person anymore. That said, her mouth looks just like a geisha's, dosen't it?
Did anyone see that made for cable movie where she woke up one day in a different world-line, with passenger air ships and sought after Fidel Castro rookie cards?

I have also noticed a marked hostility toward Andie MacDowell. I won't risk the likes of you objectifying her by posting a picture any time soon!

But I definitely want to see this movie you are talking about. One of the scary things about Google is that I now know it was called "Twice Upon A Time" (1998), her dad Bob Ringwald was in it and that it had one notable blooper.
If it is not already obvious I am fully taking a break from grading papers.

I think the detestation of Andie is less gender specific, and could have to do with her sucking at her job, maybe also a regional accent prejudice thing. I judge actors mainly by their SNL appearances (that's how Patrick Stewart and Garth Brooks won me over) and McDowel's performance was pro-athelete like. Couldn't ask for a nicer face IMO though, I'd be delighted to learn that somewhere in the world there was a race of women who all looked just like that. She has mass and occupies space though, so she's an object.

I was fond of Ms. Ringwald from her appearances in various teen films of the 80s. My least favorite view of her was from the miniseries version of Stephen King's The Stand. It wasn't a bad miniseries, just didn't like her in it.

Molly is absolute perfection in Fresh Horses, but then I'm a sucker for a redhead!

Did you see that the AFI Top 400 Movie Quote Nomination list has VP Richard (..Rich....Dick) with "Don't mess with the bull, young man, you'll get the horns." Indefensible selection as the only quote in the movie, plus they refer to Dick as the Principal.
And HOW can you talk about Molly Ringwald and Andie MacDowell in the same breath? Dave Munger has Andie pegged. As the CBC-AM guy said after seeing 4 Weddings: "If she was pushed off a cliff, she couldn't act a fall."
Molly was a better actress in Facts of Life than Andie's best performance ever (Groundhog Day?).
Keep up the good work, Flea.

Heh. My sister who looks just like Molly always hated to hear that. I, on the other hand, quite appreciated the references made to me about my resemblance to Demi.
One of us was switched at birth, I suspect........
