Brilliant post, Nick. My wife and I get strange looks from family members when we ask for the BTVS seasons on DVD for Christmas and birthdays. But the parallels to real-world stuff are sometimes uncanny. And we need stories that remind us that while the world is not black and white, there is indeed black and white in it.

I've been similarly disappointed by Joe Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5 -- certainly a paean to striving for peace, but also drawing a line in the sand and taking the battle to those who have attacked you. "To seek, to strive, and not to yield."
But, then, as you say, what the work says to us may be different from how the creator sees it -- or sees its application. Hell, maybe there's something to this deconstructionist stuff after all ...

To see an alternative look at Buffy through the lens used normally to examine apocalyptic biblical literature like Revelation and Daniel, check out Dr. Greg Stevenson's Televised Morality: The Case of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. When Reagan died, I thought he deserved a tombstone inscription at least as good as Buffy's:
"She saved the world, a lot."
