The truth
Please note: there is no link to the video at this website.
I considered deleting today's Flea and leaving this post instead. It is a jarring shift from the fluff I post about to an issue of deadly seriousness. I decided to keep everything as it is. Our hobbit pleasures are one more reason to fight the Shadow.
***
"My name is Nick Berg, my father's name is Michael, my mother's name is Suzanne ... I have a brother and sister, David and Sarah."
This is the third time I have re-written this post. Basically, I was wondering if I could bring myself to follow a link posted to a comment at Mader Blog. I have included the link at the end of this post. John decided this issue. He had this to say in a comment to his own grim post at the Castle. "It's a war. Adapt or die. It's time to face it for what it is. The fight for the future."
The link is to the propaganda video showing the slaughter of Nick Berg. I can only imagine what the family must feel.
It is more than five minutes long. These last two weeks have been dispiriting. The hazing and humiliation in the Abu Ghraib prison abuse photos were a sharp reminder of our own failings. For them, the President of the United States apologized and the free press of the world has mobilized to make sure we will not forget it. It has been said elsewhere but it is worth saying again: nobody is going to apologize for the savagery of this latest jihadist propaganda. Not the people who did it, so proud they hide their faces like the Ku Klux Klan rat bastards they are. Not the "moderates" too scared this will happen to them or their families. And certainly not the useful idiots who are the jihadists' allies. Reuters is already claiming Baghdadis see this as the latest round of a "cycle of violence."
Just so we are clear. This video shows the entire murder with sound.
Here is the link [or rather, here was the link, please see my note below]. There are many reasons not to follow it. Respect for the dignity of a murdered man. Respect for the privacy of his family. Unwillingness to give the jihadists any part of what they want. Reluctance to be exposed to such a sight. I say, watch the video. Save the file to your computer. Watch it again every time you need to be reminded of what we are dealing with.
And then... I am pleased to report a Malaysian internet host has shut down the account linked above. I will not seek to update the link to a working mirror. Please do not use the comments section of this post to solicit a working link. People are angry and we should be. That said, I will not publish racist remarks at this blog. Comments that cross the line will be deleted at my discretion. Finally, take a moment to check out the rest of the Flea while you are here. I was serious about the importance of pop culture and other fluff. The small pleasures are among the freedoms that get taken away by the Taliban and their ilk. Thank you.
And then... One of the people who comments to this post makes a good suggestion. Follow the "9/11 video" link at the top of this page and remind yourself of that day.
They took all the footage off my T.V.
Said it's too disturbing for you and me
It'll just breed anger that's what the experts say
If it was up to me I'd show it everyday
Some say this country's just out looking for a fight
Well after 9/11 man I'd have to say that's right
And you could do what I am doing right now. Visit Darryl Worley's website and remind yourself of those words. There are a lot of people in power wanting to make it real easy to be angry with America. Those same people will do everything they can to keep Americans from remembering what got them angry in the first place. Thanks to the internet, those people do not get to tell us what we can and cannot choose to see anymore. Let us choose the truth. That means owning up to the things we need to do better. It means taking responsibility as adults to preserve our own freedom even if that means we cannot turn a blind eye to horror. And it means acknowledging heroism when we find that too.
And then...Little Green Footballs describes the "demonic" video in detail. Read the description if you cannot yet bring yourself to watch it. Several other lgf posts are important to look at. Warid Phares comments on a "culture of death" and dismisses claims this latest act was in any sense retaliatory. Bob McManus calls for the release of images from Abu Ghraib under Saddam. Cox and Forkum nail it.
Andrew Sullivan reminds us that evil can be stupid. "Hitler, remember, invaded the Soviet Union."
An NRO column details the frequent use of beheading by jihadists everywhere.
Damian Penny comments and posts a link to a Mark Steyn column written following the beheading of Daniel Pearl.
Being American in T.O. comments on the underlying reason our Western elites do not believe the people of Iraq can be trusted to govern themselves.
Important points about the double-standard in media representation are made here and here.
If the equivocation of the lamestream media angers you the Emperor's rhetorical clarity is a tonic.
Barking Moonbat Early Warning System makes a salient comparison with the asymmetic logic of PeTA propaganda.
A timely dose of reason at the Belmont Club.
A Small Victory comments:
By the way, have you seen any news outlets give room to the story that Palestinian thugs opened fire at the funeral of Meirav Hatuel and her four small children - you know, the ones that were shot at point blank range by Palestinian terrorists? No, didn't think so. I only saw it at the Jersualem Post, thanks to Meryl.
The Chaos Overlord coins a new word in recognition of poor jihadist strategy.
And then... Debbye posts an update with more links.
A must read by Donald Sensing. Rev. Sensing quotes D. W. Brogan on the American entry into World War II.
For Americans war is almost all of the time a nuisance, and military skill is a luxury like Mah-Jongg. But when the issue is brought home to them, war becomes as important, for the necessary period, as business or sport. And it is hard to decide which is likely to be the more ominous for the Axis - an American decision that this is sport, or that it is business.
And linked from another of Rev. Sensing's posts is American Digest's chilling advice from General Sherman.
And then... Here is a translation of the speech made by the murderer in the video (vis Being American in T.O.).

The Hobbit pleasures are what makes the fight against the Shadow worth fighting.
They are perhaps the most important reason. For in them are wrapped our hopes and dreams for the future.
It really is 1939 again.

Bravo, Nick.
It can't have been easy to post this, for fear of glorifying the wicked men who murdered Mr. Berg. But we do need to be reminded that, contrary to the Left's favourite siren song, we did not pick a fight with the Wahhabi death cult first.
They declared war on us. On February 26, 1993. And again on August 7, 1998. And October 12, 2000. And most infamously on September 11, 2001.
We have only recently awakened to the reality of war -- and a great deal of our citizens still think we're not at war at all. They think that our deadly enemies are merely misunderstood friends.
Seeing the Wahhabis in action puts the lie to that old chestnut. They are not our friends, and they do not even want to be at peace with us. They want mastery and dominion, not fellowship and peace. And they will murder as many people as they desire to achieve their dominion.

Wonderful post, Nick. But ... you made me cry. Again.

This has to be the most disturbing video I have ever seen. I am not sure how I feel about my decision to view it, time will tell. Suffice to say sleep will be difficult this evening.
The brutality that these men possess is mind boggling. It is hard to imagine a world so deranged, so sick and at the same time remember it is true. At times these days one gets the feeling we are living in a Stephen King movie, or at least wishing that is all it was. So awful, so tragic - what happened to those innocent days when we all felt safe? I fear they are long gone. The best of this world has come and gone, God help us all.

I waited a LONG time for the video to load on my slow computer. I cannot understand why they hate us so much for trying to help them. Why are they loyal to the heartless murdering Saddam? I am truly sorry Nicholas Berg must have this video posted on the internet for the world to see, but it is a perfect reminder of the reason we are over there trying to remove these demons from power.

This is the most disturbing scene I have ever seen. This has cemented my belief that these cowards shall not and will not win. What ever it takes, we must destroy each and every jihadist.

Zarqawi is a Jordanian, not an Iraqi, although I understand Marcie's overall point that living one's life in brutality scars one.
I hope that living one's life looking over the shoulder and listening for the pounding of US military boots also has an effect and proves to be hazardous to the health.

worst vidio i have ever seen. and this war is as useless as they get, have fun while bush makes your country poor

Yesterday I deleted a comment that made its points with vulgarity and racial abuse. I will not pay to publish that sort of thing. I have decided to leave that last comment where it is minus its vulgar fake return email address. The poor spelling speaks for itself as does the author's cowardly decision to post anonymously. Finally, whatever you make of the man or his actions, you should respect the freedom of the office paid for so dearly by better men than yourself. That is President Bush to you.

I have seen the video. After the ordeal which caused a myraid of nightmares, my nausea turned to anger and disgust. I presume that it is impossible for us to attempt to understand these inhuman creatures. Humans have hearts and even in the darkest recesses of tortured souls they have compassion these monsters have neither. What was done to Nick was heartless and frightening even more so for those of us that are what is left of a diminishing Jewish population. The fact that they did nothing to atleast put him into a state where he would not be aware of what they were doing to hime is insanity. Give him alcohol render him unconcious, although it in no way makes what they did alright it would have shown just a glimmer of compassion and humanity. You know what they say an eye for an eye. They cover their faces because they are proud of their deeds? Or are they afraid that someone may subscribe to the eye for an eye theory and they are covering what would be missing if someone were to find them !!!

As you had no working link to the Nick Berg video, I watched the 9/11 footage instead. I did not need to. I know what these bastards did to the world on that day, just as I know what they did to Daniel Pearl, just as I know what they did to Nick Berg, just as I know what they would do to me if given a chance! STAY OUTRAGED!!!! Do not give in to the collective ADHD that has consumed us all! Be ANGRY!

I decided not to keep an active link to the video because the amount of interest is almost certain to blow the bandwidth of any account hosting it. I believe it is likely someone will decide to commit the resources to making sure everyone can see it. Beyond the tragedy for Mr. Berg and his family, this is an important public document that everyone should have access to.
Malcolm, thank you for your comment. I am going to add a suggestion that people turn to the 9/11 website and remind themselves of that long September morning.

I hope the American people can now understand why our President was so forth coming on liberating Iraq. Hopefully Nick Berg did not die for nothing and his death, ever so undeserving, will bring America back together and stand by our President's decision for war against terriosim like they, the public, all races, and the Democrates did after 9/11. Nick Berg's assasination is hard proof that terriosts are roaming the country of Iraq. These murderers didn't just show up after the war. They have been their for decades. Funded by Sadamm Hussein himself. I am in the Navy, going on 18 years of faithful service. I was in both Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. Flew helicopter combat missions in Iraq on the latest of the two wars. I know most of the people of Iraq are good people. They cheered and shaked our hands, which is against their customs, at the end when we seized control of Bagdad. Kuwait loves us for what we did in the first war. Please America, just don't lose perception that this war will end and the key to it now is liberating Iraq of terrisom. We have have beaten Communism, Dictatorship, and finally terrisom will be on that same list. Love the United States and the Brits that stand by us through thick and thin.

I have seen the film of Nick Berg's murder - I feel so sick I can barely type this note.
Surely we must see the terrorists for what they are - murderers. To ascribe them the same station and rights as uniformed combatants on any field of battle is ludicrous.
You must all understand a great deal more and embrace the truth. The actions now described as "abuse" were not. Rather, they were the intended release of photos designed to force our government to reveal some very difficult truths about what it must do to protect us and ensure the preservation of our liberty. The Article 32 investigation conducted in Iraq allowed for key defense witnesses to be "Militarily Unavailable."
This changed the course of the investigation and any pre-trial proceedings. It was the defense attornies and their clients that released the photos and it was intentional.
You must understand that the prisoners in the phtographs were is isolated cel blocks and were not protected by the conventions agreed to at Geneva. They were images of non-Iraqi terrorists who were detained for either killing or planning to kill Americans and coalition forces. The techniques used are actually quite mild and taught to specical troops within our armed forces and government. In fact, all persons conducting the actual interrogations had the same kinds of things done to them - and worse, as part of their training.
The defense attornies believed that the government would have to acknowledge this and dismiss any charges against the Military Police who worked "unofficially" in concert with trained interrogators.
Causing fear, humiliation, depriving one of sleep, or regular food and access to facilities are all normal aspects of such interrogations. Filming and photographing such terrorits suspects is not only common, but in the case of Arabs, is desired and intended - it does work, and countless terrorist operations have been thwarted as a result.
Our Honorbale President, though not familiar with all of these details or the other aspects of the training provided to select American forces, fell on his sword for all such men - past and present. He accepted full blame and all of the heat - despite the very necessary nature of those actions that appear to be outside of international conventions and law.
Such actions clearly are not - in fact, no real physical harm is inflicted upon such persons - they quickly recover once it is decided that they have no further useful information, or that too much time has gone by for any immediately useful information to be gained.
Once this decision [point] has been reached, long term and far more friendly tactics are used to gather historical or organizational information - this is done through limiting contact and the establushment of a real relationship with the subject - one that might surprise you is based upon a real and mutual trust and respect.
Contrasting this is the murder of Mr Berg and thousands of innocent Americans and Jews.
Please do not be mistaken, our enemies do not see a world in peace where people of different faiths co-exist. They see only an endless struggle which they wish to conclude with the same kind of murder of each of us - we are beyond reform in their eyes.
Yes, they are insane - gone mad after centuries of having to "state" worthy of affiliation. They have no political existence of any kind and there is not connection for them to any state, or union. The belong only to the faithful and see anyone believing differently as not only less than human, but a subject that must be destroyed.
Knowing this, and trying very hard to stay out of the region for these very reasons is why America supported the secular leadership of the Bathists - excusing the brutality we all knew existed, because it was far more preferable than the war we are in now. It is also why we stopped in the first Gulf War - very careful attrition tables were attended to - to preserve enough Iraqi force to allow them to secure their borders against Iran and Syria.
Only after open and direct war was declared and waged against our people, did we admit that we had to fight these people or be destroyed by them.
You must know my words are true. You must awaken and recognize that what was done to Mr Berg will be done to all of us - if we do not fight and win this war. We must begin by admitting that we are in a ware in the first place and that where we encounter "regulars" [which we will not], then yes, the convetions apply. Sadly, we are not fighting such people - we are fighting men who are insane and those that do not have the capacity to understand "state" or their free existence within it. This is why our Honorable President seeks not only an example of premptive war, but the establishment of a democracy and state worthy of political affiliation.
It is all probably too late, but at least our President is trying. LHX91A - you know my words are true.
