Alexander III of Macedon
"Leonidas would chastise me when I was offering sacrifices to the gods because I had scooped up two handfuls of incense to cast on the altar-fire. Leonidas stopped me saying,
"When you've conquered the spice-bearing regions, you can throw away all the incense you like. Till then don't waste it."
Many years later after Alexander had indeed conquered the spice-bearing regions; he sent him eighteen tons of frankincense and myrrh. It was accompnaied by a letter to Leonidas saying, "Now you can stop being so stingy among the gods."
