La Traviata (2005)

Anna Netrebko, Rolando Villazón and Thomas Hampson in Verdi's La Traviata at the Salzburg Festival, conducted by Carlo Rizzi and directed by Willy Decker.

When Verdi famously advised that opera houses should pay attention to the box office, it wasn't out of concern for their financial well-being. It was a vote of confidence in the public's ability to identify quality. The Salzburg Festival's new production of "La Traviata" is a shining tribute to this reality. Since the days of Herbert von Karajan, who ran the festival uncompromisingly until his death in 1989, no ticket has been so hard to come by.
