Show me the shoggoth

On the one hand: Guillermo del Toro's long ancipated adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness has foundered on the rocks of an R rating.

On the other hand: It was going to star Tom Cruise.

Definitely, closing Tom’s deal was in their hands. He was without a doubt, absolutely in favor of being in the movie. We met extensively, both in Canada and the U.S., dozens of times. Final polishes of the screenplay met with his approval.

We have all of us dodged a bullet.

Related: What is Guillermo del Toro thinking? Standing firm on the R rating is important. This isn't to do with gore - unless the screenplay has wandered off the reservation entirely - but intensity. But given every other film Tom Cruise has ever made, and I have enjoyed most of them, there is no way to make sense of this casting decision.
