Kate Bush: Rocket Man

Because a very few things more than make up for all the rest.

It occurs to me now that Jane Siberry basically ripped off her whole schtick from Kate Bush.

The first verse gave me high hopes, but I punched the || before she'd finished the first rep of the chorus.

I'm not, in general, much of a fan of covers. Artists attempting to cover a performance, but who cannot either preserve the phrasing of the original or devise new phrasing that flows are particularly egregious.

Perhaps it's just that I own the "blue cover" overseas edition of EJ's original album, purchased in Hong Kong in 1972.

Ric

Clearly one of those de gustibus situations. I love covers, in some ways the egregious the better. For example, if Chic had a disco cover of Rocket Man I would be all over it.

I have been reading about Japanese "theatre" and I gather their aesthetics - across the arts generally - prioritize repetition and recognition as inherently satisfying. Perhaps I have something like that going on.

Beyond these fundamental issues is the yet more fundamental fact of my Kate Bush worship. I admire Elton John but don't have the same connection to his original as I would to Kate Bush, say, reading the telephone book.
