There and back again

Filming for The Hobbit may move to England after an apparent own goal by New Zealand Equity.

The development is the latest twist in a bitter dispute between Sir Peter’s Wingnut Films production company and the actors’ union New Zealand Equity, which last month invoked an international boycott of the film over pay and conditions.

“It appears we cannot make films in our own country even when substantial financing is available,” Sir Peter said in a statement.

“New Zealand Equity’s unjustified industrial action against The Hobbit has undermined Warner Brothers’ confidence in New Zealand as a stable employment environment, and they are now, quite rightly, very concerned about the security of their US$500 million investment,” he said.
