The direction of travel

First Sea Lord Sir Mark Stanhope has saved some remnant of the Royal Navy, winning his fight against calls to cancel Britain's aircraft carrier program. Two carriers will be built with one of the two to be mothballed or kept in port.

The Royal Navy will get two new aircraft carriers – preserving Britain’s status as a global sea power – after a crunch Downing Street meeting on defence cuts chaired by David Cameron.

But one of the carriers is on course to end up as a £2.6billion white elephant until the 2020s as the Government seeks to save money. First Sea Lord Sir Mark Stanhope fought off calls for the £5.2billion project to be axed altogether at a meeting of the National Security Council yesterday.
