Good-bye to all that
Thomas Harding, Telegraph Defence Correspondent reports the SAS is "facing the greatest cuts since the end of the Second World War."
If the United States had an American president*, these men could have been offered American citizenship.
While British special forces are seen as one of the greatest global assets Britain has to offer and are particularly coveted by the US, they are expensive accounting for an estimated £2 billion out of the £37 billion MoD budget.
To say the Army cannot afford the SAS is not the same thing as saying Britain cannot afford the SAS. It is only to say that Her Majesty's government has different priorities and chooses not to afford the SAS.
One obvious alternative would be to put a full stop to the Department for International Development's £2.9bn annual aid budget and, along with its aid budget, close down the entire Department.
Now that India is "rich" enough (i.e. reliably pro-Israel, anti-jihad and therefore opposed to "British" interests) for the UK to scale back the £250m p.a. we have been giving them, perhaps the Indian armed forces would like to take on board the best special forces in the world at a discount.
A related thought: I just found another £140 million in savings. The same money could go much further if spent on killing rather than outreach.
* Seeing as Obama has raised the subject. He can't have his birth certificate "plastered to his forehead" but he could finally let the rest of us take a look at it.
