? Christopher Hitchens: 2010 Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture | Main | Ottawa terror plot details ?

August 27, 2010

Will no one rid me of this turbulent expertise?

Martin Rudner, a "distinguished research professor emeritus with Carleton's Norman Paterson School of International Affairs", concedes the alleged Ottawa jihadis might have meant to target government facilities - Ottawa has a few - but argues these Jihadi-Canadians may have had a grander target in view.

Multiculturalism.

Because all that Al Qaeda talk about Jews and Crusaders is as nothing compared to their, admittedly unvoiced, enmity toward Canada's sacred cows.

In related news: The Left has nothing, nothing else to say.

According to a local terrorism expert, extremists would have one of two possible objectives -- a narrow goal of attacking the government, or a broader goal of destroying Canadian multiculturalism.
...
"We can speculate that the mission of the cell here in Ottawa was to cause turmoil in Canadian society," he said. "So that we become hostile towards Muslims."

He said there's no obvious, specific targets.

Canada's Parliament, National Defence Headquarters, RCMP headquarters, CSIS headquarters, CSEC headquarters (welcome CSEC readers!), JTF2's secret base that all the locals know about (oops!), the Prime Minister's Office (still unbeheaded after all these years), the American embassy, the Israeli embassy, the British high commission...

But then you don't get tenure by stating the obvious.*

"They would place IEDs in vulnerable places that would explode and kill people -- including Muslims. That would create panic and vigilante action where people would take up arms against Muslims and bring about the breakdown of multicultural Canadian society."

Because if we do not embrace stoning for adultery as an integral part of Canada's rich cultural mosaic, the terrorists have already won.

Let's see if I am following the bouncing ball: Muslims plot to kill or convert us all and the real victims are... Muslims.

A special note to Canada's security experts: Unless vigilantism means foregoing a Skinny Gingerbread Latte (Venti), your worries about a vigilante backlash are misplaced; Canadian men have long since been unmanned and disarmed.

* I could go into much more detail as to the how and when of what to blow up in Ottawa for maximum impact but the jihadis have their own devious minds on the payroll without adding mine to their peaceful inner struggle. Though it's a pity nobody in, say, government thinks to ask because every time I visit the place I am appalled at the state of physical security. My email address is in the sidebar should anyone in a position to do something about it care to have the obvious pointed out to them.

Emerging threats: A former CSIS manager has reportedly told CTV that his sources say Parliament Hill was the target.

Someone's "sources" need to be arrested. But I point to the article as an example of the following meme.

Homegrown terrorism an emerging threat, Canada's public safety minister says

Seeing as Canada's hall monitor is saying it I suppose I should go easy on the half-wits in the press but can we be spared this "homegrown" nonsense? At least one of the alleged jihadis turned up in Canada in 2005. All Canada did to instigate his yearning for mayhem was hand him a medical degree and a job.

Which admittedly was our exact mistake.

Update: David Harris is marginally less clueless than most ersatz experts. But don't expect him to say anything concrete about anything. The time I met him, I described the enemy's ideology as "evil" and he was rendered speechless. In fact, I would describe the look on his face as "terrified".

What would polite company think?

Update August 28, 2010: David Harris says something! Quite a bit, actually, and especially for a Canadian and a lawyer.

Stop unrestricted immigration and halt Saudi funding of subsersion in Canada.

Liberal politicians long ago turned immigration and refugee streams into vote-importing mechanisms. Conservatives continue to do so at the expense of Canadians' safety and tens of billions in net per annum immigration costs, plus attendant and overwhelming security costs. So pronounced is the pathology that not even a terrible recession could prevent Immigration Minister Jason Kenney from hiking immigration and refugee levels from what were already roughly the highest per capita in the world. These levels are too great to allow for reliable vetting in a world where war and ideological struggles rage, and we are a target.
