Back to the drawing table

Molly Norris lost the bottle and calls off Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!. No prizes why, particularly when she says, "Good thing I am married to a handsome police officer".

Not that it will protect her from the crazies. They will certainly take the "It's time to feed the dogs!" remark to heart.

I make cartoons about current, cultural events. I made a cartoon of a fictional ’poster’ entitled “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!” with a nonexistent group’s name — Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor — drawn on the cartoon. It was in specific response to the recent censoring of a South Park episode, a desire to bring home the importance of the first amendment. I did not intend for my cartoon to go viral. I did not intend to be the focus of any ’group’. This particular cartoon has struck a gigantic nerve, something I was totally unprepared for.

Not that you need her permission to draw Mohammed. Or anyone else's permission, despite what the Canadian government would have you believe.

Related: And they said Boobquake would be a bust.

Boobquake founder Jennifer McCreight may have some serious questions to answer.

Her day of action calling on the women of the world to dress scandalously and prove wrong an Iranian cleric who blames natural disasters on cleavage has started, well, disastrously.

At 11am local time, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan, no doubt causing thousands of Boobquake fans to hastily button up.

Also: Ross Douthat on Western institutions’ cowering before the threat of Islamist violence.

Our culture has few taboos that can’t be violated, and our establishment has largely given up on setting standards in the first place.

Except where Islam is concerned. There, the standards are established under threat of violence, and accepted out of a mix of self-preservation and self-loathing.

This is what decadence looks like: a frantic coarseness that “bravely” trashes its own values and traditions, and then knuckles under swiftly to totalitarianism and brute force.

Douthat is wrong about the Weimar comparison. The combination of nuclear weapons and a comprehensive loss of identity in the West makes our situation worse. But this is a good start for The New York Times.
