The Promotion of Virtue
Muhammad Diyab on good intentions and the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPVPV). His concerns over-zealous members of the local Inquisition have over-stepped their remit sound strangely familiar.
The same role undertaken by the CPVPV in Saudi Arabia is fulfilled in other countries by different bodies using different names, such as "the morality police" and others, and they have a different approach and criteria than that of the CPVPV. As for the CPVPV, this has been set up in accordance with divine law, and only committed religious scholars with knowledge of Islamic Shariaa Law and a desire for social reform are entrusted with this job.
In Canada, we call our morality police "Human Rights Commissions". Unlike the Saudi version, our morality police is not grounded in the law but in an ad hoc overturning of the law in favour of a religion they are making up as they go along.
So that's one/nil for Saudi when it comes to intellectual honesty and coherence.
