The "working on the sabbath" angle is classy.

The other tragedy is that a lot of Israelis think they would be better off without the US security alliance, and that America is holding them back.

That may be so, but in their neighbourhood, living under the United States' survivable nuclear umbrella (versus their own highly vulnerable one without significant second-strike capability) may be the only thing keeping them alive.

Do you believe "President" Obama would retaliate using America's nuclear arsenal were Israel to be attacked with nuclear weapons (or other WMDs)? Because that is what a nuclear umbrella is supposed to be there for.

I do not believe most administrations would relatiate with nuclear weapons under almost any circumstances, certainly not for an ally, and certainly under under this administration for Israel.

Touché, Obama probably wouldn't. I imagine at least some administrations would; although probably not any in the past 20 years.

I just don't see a long-term future for Israel on its own. They have guts, good equipment and good doctrine, but really, really lousy geography.

And as the Germans and Japanese taught us in the Second World War, good equipment and great tactics can last against numerical superiority for a little while, but ultimately they get overwhelmed. That's Israel's future, demographically or militarily.
