More her style than karate

Some ideas never get old. Take Margaret Thatcher's first few months in power as an inspiration.

During Margaret Thatcher’s first months in power she clashed with ministers, cold-shouldered civil servants and declined an offer of 20 “karate ladies” to guard her at an international summit, secret government papers reveal today.

One of her first moves on taking office in May was to start cutting Civil Service jobs. The Government machine needed cutting by at least 5 per cent, she insisted, but ideally closer to 20 per cent.

The United Kingdom is a Parliamentary dictatorship as a matter of fact, if not quite as a matter of law. All that is required is for the people of the United Kingdom to elect parliamentarians capable of making the right decisions and carrying them out. Nothing is irreversible. Nothing is lost unless we decide it is.

Which is the saddest part of the story, actually.
