Leon de Winter considers President Obama's speech to "the Muslim world", the end of America's alliance with Israel and "right-wing, militaristic, chauvinistic, belligerent" Israel as a "confusing phenomenon" for American Jews.
So much for "the Jewish lobby", says de Winter.
And now, after the Cairo address, they will keep standing by him and distance themselves from an Israel that produces awful pictures of bombed buildings and mutilated bodies of women and children - American Jews, at cocktail parties in the Village or the Upper West Side, prefer Israel to act proportionately and to behave as decent, civilized, upper-class Jews, not as Middle Eastern warriors. Since the 1982 massacres in Sabra and Shatila, committed by Lebanese Maronites but attributed to Israel and Ariel Sharon, liberal American Jewry went on a long journey and arrived at a historic point: just like Obama, it gave up on Israel.
De Winter suggests Russia could make take America's place as Israel's strategic partner. I think Israelis would be better off working with India. I also think the fact this discussion is necessary - is even possible - should be a source of great shame to Americans (not that Canada has anything to be proud of in the same regard).
Related: Most Americans say President Obama has not been tough enough on North Korea and Iran (via Ace).
A FOX News poll released Monday finds more than two-thirds of Americans say Obama has not been tough enough on North Korea (69 percent), while some 15 percent think his actions have been "about right" and 3 percent think he has been too tough.
Sizable majorities of Democrats (65 percent), Republicans (78 percent) and independents (61 percent) agree Obama should be tougher on North Korea. Among those voters who backed Obama in the 2008 presidential election, 59 percent say he has not been tough enough.
