CHRC hits bottom, digs

Ezra Levant reports his parents are now being harassed by a private investigator working for Canadian Human Rights Commission lawyer Giacomo Vigna. Please RTWT.

Vigna has been sending a private investigator to my parents' house again and again, demanding to see me. My parents, who are far more polite than I am, keep telling Vigna's hired tough guy that I don't live there anymore. I did when I was a teenager. But that was in 1990.

The last time Vigna's hired muscle came to my parents' house, he refused to leave. My parents said he had a Bluetooth phone device in his ear, and seemed to be taking instructions from someone -- Vigna himself? -- who told him not to go until he had found me. In the end, Vigna's enforcer must have lost his serenity, too, because he threw some papers down at my parents feet, and stormed off.

Classy.

This is indeed stupid, but there's pieces missing from the story. Something tells me that there's more to it than simply harassing a guy's parents. It fails the logic test.

What is Ezra's mailing address? Is it his parents' place? That may explain why the goof keeps showing up. A PI is not going to keep coming to the same wrong address several times unless he has a reason to believe that this is, in fact, where the guy lives. So Ezra's probably still receiving mail there, even if it isn't his place of residence. We're dealing with people here, not robots.

From some experience with collections I can tell you that people will do or say pretty well anything to misdirect you, and 99% of the time it is a flat-out lie. So if you are Mr. PI at the Levant household, used to dealing with seedy characters and not upright citizens, Ma and Pa saying "He doesn't live here" sounds an awful lot like "He lives here but we're playing our part in the scam and trying to mislead you".

It can be pretty easily sorted out by Ezra himself, I would think.

Point taken. Though if this PI cannot figure out the difference between tracking down a lawyer and publisher and somebody who has not lived up to their Columbia House DVD purchase obligations then he is not much of a PI.

Yeah - except what reason does this guy have to be looking for Ezra in the first place? Why would he suppose that this is something like a collections case where the guy he's looking for is going to hide... unless Vigna is lying to him?

Not that we have any reason to believe Vigna is lying to his PI. Please remember Canada's defamation laws everyone; I post this notice as an attempt to report fact and not to make suppositions about Vigna's motives or reputation. Though I would certainly welcome his explanation for why he thinks it is necessary to send a PI to Levant's parents house.
