I drop the comma but am a big fan of semi-colons. And you may have noticed I single-space between sentences, a habit I picked up freelancing for the National Post.

I was taught, back in the Dark Ages when we had to do our essays on a manual typewriter, that it was always two spaces after a period and a colon, one space after everything else. I believe (well, I read somewhere, I don't have the patience to sit there and measure the kerning or whatever they call it) that most major word processing programs automatically put two spaces after those items, at least when set to American grammar/punctuation.
