Gothic Outfit or Halloween Costume?

Coilhouse's delectable Nadya Lev considers an instance of the eternal question: Goth or not goth?

Today we are going to play a game! It’s called “Gothic Outfit or Halloween Costume?” There are eight gothic ensembles in this post; some of them are actual outfits designed by alternative clothing labels to be worn out and about in the scene, others are Halloween costumes intended for adults who want to play-pretend to be goths one day out of the year. Can you guess which is which?

I got one wrong, #7.

The biggest tip-off was hair and masks/veils.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, goth-hair was legally required to be black and straight or black and messy, a la Robert Smith. These days things are a lot less cookie-cutter and there's more colour and style variation. Using the hair marker you can flag 2, 3, and 8 as legit, whereas 1 is right out of Costume Central Casting.

The other thing is, wearing a mask or veil gets in the way of broadcasting one's darkness and moodiness, and where is the fun in that. So flag 4 and 6 as impractical a.k.a. costumes.

That leaves just 5 and 7. 5 is what late-80s rocker girls would consider to be a formal dress so rule that out as costume. 7 looks like pure costume to me but is actually legit, hence my error.

The mask/veil observation is inspired. If that had occurred to me I would not have been tripped up by #6 ; otherwise an entirely presentable romantigoth outfit.

I got them all right, however the goth fashions are, in my opinion, still over stated. Then again, just what the hell is goth fashion, anyway? I run anywhere from cyber to Edwardian and anything in between, not that I'm a fashion expert, but it's impossible to say what it actually is, Voltaire's missives not withstanding. I do prefer the more historic/classic look in women's wear (on women, not me...), but I've seen some pretty inventive stuff I like as well. I guess it all depends on who is wearing it and when and where. Am I rambling..? Sorry, I have to go paint my nails now...
