War is bad

PortmanT.jpg

You'll never get away with this, Black Helmet Man! You are bad! You are bad and we are good! Your badness will be the end of you, and our goodness will be our triumph! Bad is bad - good is good! Bad-bad-good-bad! Good-good-bad-good, bad! Good.
- Princess Bunhead

I have been giving careful consideration to this Natalie Portman T-shirt choice and it occurs to me that war is bad.* We should stop wars. There, problem solved.

* This as opposed to my usual way of thinking where us losing wars is bad. Call me old fashioned.

Ah the bygone days, when the Empire felt no reluctance to avenge one of her generals and take down the tomb of the Mahdi.

I think we tend forget the impact of those largely symbolic actions today. Things like bombarding the Mahdi's tomb and burning the Old Summer Palace did send an important message, namely, do not screw with the British Empire or it'll cost you dearly.

In some ways what I find most reassuring in thinking about the River War is the fact it took the British thirteen years and a change of government to get their act together. And this at the height of Empire. Taking this into account we might be forgiven for similarly long lead times today. The problem, of course, is that with nuclear weapons and weaponized smallpox we may not have the same luxury of dithering.

Ah yes, but Natalie Portman does want to try a lesbian relationship. If you're into that sort of thing, that may score her a few points as to her war silliness. ;-)

why do the pampered few insist on declaring against things that are so far removed from their lives?

Oh and she is so cute too.. sniff sniff..

Hey, where um, did she put her, um, chestly girl bits. They seem to be missing. Maybe she is not wearing them anymore as part of the protest...

And for the record, I fully advocate the surgical bombing of targets of importance to those that wish to f with us.

So mote it be.

Churchill's account is on my shelf but I haven't read it yet (!). This account is quite abridged, I believe; an unabridged version is being published this year but won't fit into my budget.
