Ray Nagin

New Orleans mayor, Ray Nagin, a man whose disposition is reportedly that of a "calm technocrat" in normal circumstances, made a passionate statement in a WWL-AM radio interview critical of reported delays in action in the aftermath of the hurricane. While Nagin has also faced criticism for his failure to issue a mandatory evacuation order until less than 24-hours before Katrina hit, his September 1 statement already seems to be one for the history books (hat tip to a Flea reader).

I have no idea what they're doing. But I will tell you this: You know, God is looking down on all this, and if they are not doing everything in their power to save people, they are going to pay the price. Because every day that we delay, people are dying and they're dying by the hundreds, I'm willing to bet you.

Well they are doing everything in their power. Could Mr. Nagin check in with God and find out if He is satisfied? Remember, George Bush only has two kidneys to donate.

I believe you will find the Mayor credits President Bush for the "John Wayne dude" chosen to get stuff done. And if you follow the Castle link in the post following this one you will find John Donovan argues that while any Mayor could do little to address a situation on this scale that it is the Mayor's job to light a fire under people with a call for help. I believe Nagin does an excellent job of this. Finally, given the calamity that has befallen the people in his care I believe we might find a smidgeon of sympathy for any rhetorical excess some might read into his statement.

There will be plenty of time for Michael Moore style lingering camera shots on the Mayor's face or conspiracy theories about how the levies were destroyed by demolition charges later.

If there is a God and heaven that arsehole Nagin won't get in. His claptrap about that it is racism and classism that cause the lack of help is total crap. His city and his state was unprepared for the hurricane. I mean they did not even manage to put their own emergency plan into action. His behaviour in all of this is despicable.

My earlier suggestion about waiting for the conspiracoids to talk about the levees being blown by demolition charges took about 36 hours to take effect. I admit I had not anticipated a variant would be shouted by a reporter at two former Presidents.

"Former presidents, Bush and Clinton gave a news conference today. Towards the end, as Bush and Clinton were walking off the stage, at about 10:20 am EST, I heard a female reporter shout a last question that went “how do you respond to rumors that the levees were intentionally opened?"
