The politics of wishful thinking

For all the talk of a "politics of fear", British security services were correct to signal a terrorist threat to the London Underground a year before the July 7 attacks.

Blueprints for an attack on the Underground and maps of the tunnels were reported to have been discovered at an al-Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan, a Sunday newspaper reported. It is the latest in a series of terror scares.

I can only hope "knowing" dismissals of current and future threats are themselves dismissed as the self-serving hypocrisy they have proven to be time and time again. Many will never see the danger no matter what the evidence of their lying eyes. A continuing source of alarm is the prospect the casualties that would ensue following a catastrophic collapse of an Underground line beneath the Thames. Worse yet are reports that "radio systems of some emergency services do not work in the deepest Tube stations." We should have learned how dangerous such a communications failure can be following the massacres of September 11, 2001. I am not convinced we have.
