Secret trials

I had no idea Ernst Zundel was in custody let alone that he had been detained for two years as a danger to Canadian national security. Zundel and his supporters are Nazis and neo-Nazis and reportedly among the largest producers of Nazi propaganda material in the world. He also believes in hidden antarctic Nazi flying saucer bases. So, not quite right in the head then. As someone who was personally threatened by Heritage Front thugs in Ottawa on more than one occasion, a less appealing prisoner of conscience is difficult for me to imagine and, truth be told, I cannot think of anyone in this country I would rather have locked up indefinitely.

That said, he should be promptly deported to Germany, charged with an offense under Canadian law or released. To do anything else is to make a mockery of any criticism Canadians may have regarding detainees elsewhere in the world. Meanwhile, Zundel is not alone in being held under a Canadian security certificate. Zundel's views are monstrous as are the purported associates of others held under this legal provision. But I fail to see the logic in trusting a government to run star chamber trials when we cannot trust them to manage the airwaves or to deliver the mail.
