Both SW and ST have their significant failings. I often wonder how a series that was more "realistic" with regards to science and human nature would look (and don't say Babylon 5!)
No reflexive hatred of capitalism ("payday" episodes a la MASH)
Marine contingents on board starships
(think "Aliens", or even some episodes evoking "Tour of Duty". No more expendable red shirts)
Retaining significant cultural differences among humans (Think of "the Federation" being composed of various Earth nations, power blocs, trade alliances, and their colonies)
NO TRANSPORTERS (thus no McGuffins, easy way outs or deus ex machinas to resolve plots cheaply)
MORE CAPTAIN KIRKS! Down with Politically Correct starship captains!

Space: Above And Beyond had some of these elements. Sometimes I think Debbye was the only other person to have seen the series...
