What makes Europe a "creepy place" and messenger of "bad news" are people like the art critics from the Süddeutsche Zeitung or the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung cited in this Herald Tribune review of reaction to MoMA-Berlin.

It is always striking how today's hysterical criticism of Anglo-American culture merely echos that of the Fascists of World War II. In this connection I remember seeing an Italian Fascist poster (I tried googling it, but I still couldn't find a reproduction online), portraying a black American soldier auctioning off the Venus de Milo for $2 (price written on the statue itself in black marker). It seems to imply much the same as the present critics: America is a cultural wasteland, barbarians who use their money and power to "steal" the culture of old Europe.
If repeated changes rung on the same old stale ideas is a sign of intellectual decadence, then modern Europe can honestly be said to be decadent.
