Arte of Defence

For all your Elizabethan fencing needs. Don't miss the pdf format manuals section.

The Arte of Defence was studied and taught by masters in the late 15th and 16th Centuries. The most famous of the teachers typically came from Italy. Until the advent of the smallsword and the French schools of fence, the Italians and to a lesser degree the Spanish, enjoyed the role of the most sought after teachers of the Arte of Defence.

Nick,
I didn't realize you were a fencer! We should get together to cross blades at some point. . .I play schlager, but I can cope with a Del Tin if that's your sport. . .

I am sadly ignorant of both though I used to fight épée so I imagine I could pick up schlager. Are you with the SCA/Academy of the Medieval Sword/etc. etc.?

SCA. I have an epee, but it's rapier-hilted which makes it rather less useful against a modern-hilted version. Epee fighters tend to do well at rapier, while Sabre fighters tend not to: they play with a toy fishing rod, not a sword. At least the epee is a simulation of a real weapon!
