Auto-destruct

A cleaner at the Tate Britain showed more sense than the gallery's curators.

A cleaner at London's Tate Britain modern art gallery threw out a bag of garbage which formed part of an artwork because it was thought to be trash, British newspapers reported on Friday.

The transparent bag of garbage -- full of newspaper, cardboard and other bits of paper -- formed part of a work by German-born artist Gustav Metzger called "Recreation Of First Public Demonstration Of Auto-Destructive Art."

Wasn't there a little kerfuffle a while ago, when after a "showing" in New York,I believe,The janitor came in and tossed out the garbage. The ,uh,artist had taken the junk the guests had brought in and left during the showing and had made a "work of art" out of it.The Janitor, being much smarter then the artist, knew where it really belonged and acted accordingly.

About 2 or 3 years ago a show like this was going on at the AGO here in Toronto. It was called "Waste Management", or something. I'd gone with some friends to see an exhibition of religious art from the Vatican that was showing at the same time (THAT show was packed, BTW). We decided to see this display to, since we were there. Rooms full of trash bags, piles of old rags, floors full of broken glass...and echoingly empty of patrons. My pals and I couldn't believe this was being taken at all seriously. What made it funnier was that a gallery official was showing some contributors throught the exhibit, earnestly expounding on its daring and innovation. The bigwigs were looking utterly bored of it. It was too much, we started to snicker. We inadvertently started one of the young female ushers there giggling as well. The contributors heard us all and began looking looking uncomfortable, with the official trying desperately to get their attention back. We made it out just before laughing out loud.
You can't make stuff like these exhibits up.
