Red Ensign Standard

RedEnsignStandard.jpg

What was once a link round up at the Castle becomes an institution at the Raging Kraut. The Red Ensign Brigade offers its first bi-weekly carnival, the Red Ensign Standard.

As host, I thought I'd start off with a little about why I'm flying the Red Ensign in this little corner of the web. It's not for family history reasons. In fact, I'm quite certain that most if not all of my relatives fought against this banner in both World Wars. But my parents came to Canada looking for a better life from a shattered Europe, and by God they found it. Canada was and still is one of the only countries on this planet where success and security is still an output of how hard you work when you arrive. I truly believe this.

Well said, Ray.

Of course, in keeping with my status as a Book and Language snob (well deserved, I might add) I can't help but feel a little twinge that our name apparently came from a committee at the Department of Redundancy Department, given that an Ensign is a Standard, too...

Standard:

"A flag, banner, or ensign, especially:

a. The ensign of a chief of state, nation, or city.

b. A long, tapering flag bearing heraldic devices distinctive of a person or corporation.

c. An emblem or flag of an army, raised on a pole to indicate the rallying point in battle.

d. The colors of a mounted or motorized military unit.

Ensign:

1. A national flag displayed on ships and aircraft, often with the special insignia of a branch or unit of the armed forces.

2. A standard or banner, as of a military unit.

3. Archaic. A standard-bearer.

4. a. A commissioned rank in the U.S. Navy or Coast Guard that is below lieutenant junior grade.
b. One who holds this rank.

5. a. A badge of office or power; an emblem: “I want the seals of power and place,/The ensigns of command,/Charged by the people's unbought grace,/To rule my native land” (John Quincy Adams).

b. A sign; a token.

But that's just me, being true to my Inner Armorer and Pedant.

Hey, it's like the RCMP Police!

This is what I get for making a dumb joke. :) One thought is we could change the name every two weeks. And you are * this * close to getting a rotating English/French/Inuit title! I am almost certain that one would get a simple majority from the contrarian vote alone...

How more Canajun could we be if we adopted an English/French/Inuit title!

I say yea!

John, you really should make the hike north for a Red Ensign convention one of these days.
