Yuan-class

Reports of China's Type 039 Song class submarine emerged in Strategy Page over a month ago. The Washington Times now reports on China's new Yuan class deisel-electric

One official said the new submarine was a "technical surprise" to U.S. intelligence, which was unaware that Beijing was building a new non-nuclear powered attack submarine. U.S. intelligence agencies have few details about the new submarine but believe it is diesel-powered rather than nuclear-powered, said officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The new boat, which appears to be a combination of indigenous Chinese hardware and Russian weapons, suggests that China is building up its submarine forces in preparation for a conflict over Taiwan, defense analysts say.

It did occur to me to be a great way to move along that SSK sale to Taiwan.

We can expect the whole US pacific fleet to be wiped out in a moment's notice if it dares interferes into a China's doomestic affairs. With its Navy destroyed in the Pacific America go into a state of panic and lose it right as leading military power.

Thanks, "Sam". I think that was the single most deranged comment anyone has ever left at the Flea.

Flea, you are a little bug, just like your name implies. I have been serving on board US submarines for 17 years, now, and let me assure you:

THE CHINESE ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO WIPE OUT THE US PAC FLEET

Thanks Chief Petty Officer, but you have entirely misconstrued the meaning of my post. If you read my reply to "Sam" you would see I agree with your assessment of the strength of the United States Pacific fleet. Furthermore, if you read my work regularly you would know I am entirely sympathetic both to the US Navy and to submariners in particular.

Don't sweat it, Flea. Chinese hypernationalists are much given to this type of bizarre braggadoccio. China is the "new superpower", it will "topple the US from its position", etc., etc. (never mind the fact that the US never intended to be the world's policeman in the first place). It looks like this kind of ranting is a species of face saving (if so, it doesn't go over real well in the West, but hey, whatever turns their crank...)
Oh, and Sam?

Chief Petty Officer David Blackshear, what is your opinion if the us navy have to engage a modern diesel sub navy, lets say chinese navy with 20 or more modern subs? In my opinion the us navy will finally win but they will take a lots of casualties. It is real that moden diesel subs are more quiet than modern nuclear subs, and diesel subs with AIP are even more quiet. I want your opinion.
