Mephitis

A temple to Mephitis, a goddess of the pre-Roman Samnites, has been found at Pompeii. As the goddess of noxious vapours - her name also means "skunk" - it would seem to have been an appropriate locale.

The discovery in Pompeii of a pre-Roman temple is being hailed as evidence that the city was sophisticated and thriving 300 years before Vesuvius erupted. The temple is said to be of Mephitis, a female deity worshipped by the Samnites, a mysterious ancient people who preceded the Romans in Pompeii.

My uncle who raised me was from a nearby town. I've visited on 3 occasions, and I assure you the whole region is, how shall I put this delicately...? Stinky.
