You have to break a few eggs

Victor Davis Hanson on omelettes (via INDC Journal).

Recent chefs and historians have suggested - contrary to historic consensus - that the frying of eggs in culinary practice originated in the autocratic societies of the Euphrates river valley. The application of iron to the craft of cooking eggs was widespread throught the pre-enlightenment world as noted by Herodotus at the battle of Teflon. In India, China and the New World the frying of eggs was not unheard of.

But only in Europe did the concept of the omelette gain traction. This can be attributed to two phenomena: The Frankish culture's precision in matters of cuisine and the spirit of inquisition handed down to the Europeans from the Hellenisic societies of classical antiquity.

This homage to VDH omits the eggs Socrates had for breakfast the day he needed the energy to flee the rout at Delium.

I was going to add something about Sherman's march through Georgia involving breaking eggs but the pun would not come to me.

To the blogroll with you!
