Pharisees

Andrew Sullivan has it exactly right.

Beat up on the Samaritans; let the Pharisees off the hook. For some people, that's a literal reading of the Gospels.

Unfortunately the Church as a whole has lost some pretty important battles over the years, one of which was divorce. We aren't the first--the Jews had rampant divorce in Jesus' time. He specifically spoke against that in the very passage Sullivan referred to.

I've spent 27 years in church, and I have seen many pastors address immorality amongst the members. Adultery, drunkeness, lust, spouse abuse, illegitimate children, etc do happen within the church, but you could argue that those people are the ones that most need to be there. Jesus came to heal the sick, the lame, and the sinners.

This argument strikes me as similar to the one that says there's no need to spend billions going to Mars because we've got too much wrong here on earth. Ridiculous. We deal with the sinner and the saint in their own time.
