Objective Individual Combat Weapon

I know nothing about firearms. This is just cool because it looks like something to kill Aliens with.

Very basically, the U.S. military wanted a weapon system that mates a conventional rifle with a 20mm "cannon" that is capable of delivering a special munition that can be user set to explode with an airburst at user determined and programmable ranges.

The OIWS is fading away, be replaced with a more soldier-friendly "system". Its Achilles Heel was weight: the fuctional weapon weighed about 8kg, with the target weight about 6kg. For an infantry weapon, 5kg is the upper limit. However, a new program is underway with better target specs, possibly goosed by the 'F2000' by Fabrique Nationale: http://world.guns.ru/assault/as41-e.htm. The 40mm grenade launcher will probably by replaced by the 25mm cartridge from the Objective Crew-served Weapon System.

Cheers

the latest technology in the weaponsarea is the M29 codename: OICW or Objective Individual Combat Weapon. the OICW is an excellent addition to the United States arsenal. Being able to fire both 5.56MM NATO standard rounds and 20MM Air-fused Shell Grenades it is the ultimate choice to go with when in a gun fight. Able to carry either a 30 round clip or a 50 round clip for the 5.56 firing part it has a greater advantage over the older and obsolete M-16 assualt rifle. Combined with its ability to fire 20MM grenades and have the ability to use a laser aiming system or a infra-red scope it is as i said before the best choice for a gunfight. thank you for reading this
