Ground Zero Cross
I signed a petition to include the Ground Zero Cross in a future WTC memorial (via Right We Are!). A reported lawsuit-threat on the part of atheists wishing to prevent the Cross from becoming part of a memorial strikes me as profoundly wrong-headed. I fail to see how an acknowledgement of Christian faith would preclude the faith, or lack thereof, of others. More important, the Ground Zero Cross has personal significance to so many and an historical significance linked directly to the events of the day and the harrowing time which followed.
The "Ground Zero Cross" was the large steel cross found in the rubble of the World Trade Center by a construction worker, who came across it in the midst of the WTC wreckage just a few days after the attacks. It was standing straight, 20-feet high, surrounded by many smaller crosses. The cross at Ground Zero was not simply the cross beams remaining from an existing building. It was formed out of beams from Building One plunging, splitting and crashing into Building Six.

I've written up my experiences of the day in my "blog" (see the URL, above). Still can't quite get it to my satisfaction, but I felt I had to get something down.
Posted by: Fred Kiesche at September 11, 2003 08:29 AMThat is peculiar. Comments do vanish from time to time but my editing policy is limited to trolls or people calling me an "imperialist" without offering an argument for their own ostensibly virtuous views.
Kiesche comments are, of course, beyond reproach!

So here it is again:
