Smoke without fire

"Now, all fragrance is an illusion. But to create smokiness, perfumers use a range of materials (both synthetic and natural): isobutyl quinolone, cade oil (also known as ‘juniper tar’, birch tar (leathery, rich), resins such as labdanum (from the cistus plant) and opoponax. It’s done with such deftness that some smoky perfumes can almost trigger a fight-or-flight response, when you catch a whiff unexpectedly."
