City of 33 Saints
Now it's Timbuktu.
Once again the world is watching with increasing alarm as religious extremists destroy centuries-old historical sites because they find them offensive. In 2001 it was the towering statues of Buddha in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, that were turned into rubble by the Taliban.
Egypt is next. Buried for thousands of years, safe from time and bandits just as the ancient Egyptians intended, then dug up an put on display by half-hearted, incompetent infant empires only to be smashed by mouth breathing morons a mere century later. Until twenty years ago, the collections at the British Museum and the Louvre at least would escape the fire and the wrecking hammer. Now, they are on this movement's doorstep.
