France is set to perform a U-turn on its pledge to ban the burqa because of threats including 'terrorist reprisals' and legal challenges from the EU.
Despite President Nicolas Sarkozy's assertion that Islamic veils were 'not welcome', MPs are to recommend today that they are barred only from public transport and civic buildings such as schools and hospitals.
They would be permitted in private buildings or on the street.

"Legal challenges"? "From the EU"? Think what you like of the French, only the British are stupid enough to be cowed by the opinions of an unrepresentative foreign court. Actually, come to think of it, Canadians are stupid in much the same way. So I'll just shut the hell up.
Unmitigated: France balks at more troops for Afghanistan, decides to send "more mentors and civilian helpers" (someone get Olivia Chow on the phone, her intellectual property has been violated).
Despite refusing to send more troops to Afghanistan, Mr Sarkozy showed no shame in admitting France's national security would depend on other countries shouldering the burden.
