The dignity and security of women

France's ruling UMP Party proposes £700 fines for women who wear burkas and niqabs on the street. Imagine the neck splitting outrage should this have been proposed anywhere in the United States or the United Kingdom.

France proposes. The left disposes.

Women who wear Islamic veils in public in France face a £700 fine under strict new laws being proposed. The amount could be doubled for Muslim men who force female members of their family to cover their faces.

Jean-Francois Cope, president of Nicolas Sarkozy’s ruling UMP Party, said the legislation was intended to protect the ‘dignity’ and ‘security’ of women.

By contrast, French Muslim women could always try dressing in Western women's fashion on the streets of Riyadh. Here's your ticket. Enjoy!

The personal is the political: Israel's female warriors.

Igor Kruter photographed female Israeli soldiers as he would in a fashion shoot. "Women give life, but can also take it away."

If the right were the misogynists we are made out to be, these women would not be our heroes. If the left supported the rights of women, these women would be their heroes too.
