Jedward 1 : Red China 0

Red Chinese ambassador Fu Ying rethinks her noise complaints, kowtows before the semiotic steamroller of popular culture and reveals herself to be a "huge X Factor fan". The world has not witnessed diplomatic ass kissing of this magnitude since the fall of Paris in 1940. Unreserved adulation of this kind is generally reserved for North Korean despots, Academy members in Oscar season or Barack Obama (2008).

I preserve it for, ahem, posterity.

Last week Chinese officials were said to be unhappy over the noise, litter and graffiti left by dozens of teenagers outside the X Factor house. The £6million house in Golders Green, where the ITV show's contestants are living, is next door to a property owned by the Chinese embassy.

But now it has emerged that China's ambassador Madam Fu Ying enjoys watching The X Factor 'when there is time'. She says even her own daughter had asked if she could fly to Britain to join fans gathered at the house.

Madam Fu has sent a public letter to The Sun, talking about the show and giving her opinion on each contestant.

She writes: 'It was fun finding myself caught up in X Factor fever and reading about the "diplomatic row" involving my embassy. My daughter emailed me wondering if she could fly in and join the screaming fans! It would be unfair to mention who my favourites are, but I think all the acts have some great qualities.' She praised twins John and Edward for their 'determination and spirit'.

Madam Fu goes on to say how she believes Stacey has 'been more and more brave' while Jamie's 'sincere and energetic' voice 'gets the crowd going'. She thinks Danyl and Olly are 'great showmen' and Lloyd and Joe have 'potential'. The ambassador also says Welsh singer Lucie has 'a lovely voice, like the country she is from'.

On Simon Cowell and his fellow judges, she adds: 'It is going to be a very close competition. It will be difficult for the judges, who are of impressively high quality.'
