Speculation

Information Dissemination considers the case of the vanishing Chinese submarine story.

First, if the USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) had its towed sonar deployed off the coast of the Philippines, then she was actively searching for a submarine. It is not normal behavior for the US Navy to tow around an expensive towed sonar in the littorals off a country with no submarines like the Philippines. That suggests the USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) knew there was a Chinese submarine in the area, then deployed the towed sonar, and it was at that time a PLAN submarine hit the sonar.

Second, if the PLAN submarine hit the towed array, it means the submarine was positioning itself behind the USS John S. McCain (DDG-56), meaning just like the USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) was hunting the submarine, the submarine was hunting the destroyer.

the really scary part of this news item is not that the submarine got tangled in the sonar.. that is a typical 'bait and switch' tactic by the media.

What is really scary, and no doubt of grave concern to the U.S. Navy, is that the Navy didn't, or couldn't detect the Chinese submarine before it got entangled.

It is well known that some subs are overly quiet compared to others. It speaks volumes of the advancement of 'quiet technology' by our supposed enemies. It speaks higher volumes that the U.S. is not on top of this potential lapse in technological advantage.

Not too many years ago, in the contested and strategic waters of the Persian Gulf, a Chinese submarine surfaced, previously un-detected, in the middle of a U.S. Navy carrier task-force. I'm pretty sure that Naval careers were ended in disgrace at that very moment. Assumed technological supremacy of the U.S. Navy was hitherto taken for granted. Not so anymore.

Defence cuts to ANY military program that seeks to keep America at the forefront of military technology is a fool's gambit.

The only thing that keeps the enemies of the west at bay is the overwhelming technical advantage held by the U.S. military. It keeps us all safe in our beds at night, like it or lump it.

Obama threatens that for generations to come. 2012 can't come soon enough.
