What happens when a progressive love for diversity hostile monocultures collides with a progressive insistence we are protected from the consequences of our own choices.

After months of suffering through thrown rocks and threats directed at his squadron during numerous calls to the Rosengård neighbourhood in Malmö, local fire chief Henrik Persson said on Tuesday he is stepping down from his post.

“I’m not getting any support from our top management. They don’t listen to our requests for a secure working environment,” Persson told the Sydsvenskan newspaper.

In related news: Swedish men "not as masculine as they used to be".

Swedish men have become more metrosexual and less masculine in recent times, according to a new survey polling both sexes on their opinion of the Swedish male.

Metrosexual is an extremely broad term. Could mean great vanity, meticulous grooming and attire, enthusiastic use of hair products, ebullient consumerism, comfortable income, relative disinterest in breeding offspring, a bit of dandyism, exquisite taste in decorating, the arts, et cetera.

There are plenty of "tough guy" soldiers, statemen and scientists throughout history who would fit most of that criteria. Julius and Augustus Caesar, for starters. Tycho Brahe. Walter Raleigh. William III. Pretty much all of the Medicis. Most Western aristocrats, monarchs, politicians, generals and admirals from 1600-1870. Nelson. Patton. MacArthur. Hell, even James Bond.

Too many writers conflate the broad term "metrosexual" with the much more specific and precise term "pansy" (i.e. a weakling who fights not).

But I strenuously reject the idea that modern masculinity can be boiled down to acting like a child, with extra attitude thrown in. A proper man can be at home both on the farm and on Park Avenue. He can speak knowledgeably on the mundane and the sublime. He is not fenced in by self-proscribed ignorance.

The idea that we should all be shabbily dressed children with little connection to worlds of sophistication and finery is a lie from the Pit of Hell.

Just don't forget your ass-whooping dignity, either.

With apologies to Potter Stewart, but

I shall not today attempt further to define metrosexuality. However, I know it when I see it.
