Why Hussein does not read

Say your charming folkways include a perfect and unalterable book. You can hardly be blamed for not bothering to read anything else; in an important sense, reading anything else is a kind of blasphemy. An United Nations survey finds Arabs read an average of four pages of literature per year (hat tip to RightGirl). But to suggest it is Arabs who do not read is to misstate the situation. That is to say, the Maronite and the Copt - both Arabs - read a couple airport novels and the other 300 passengers on the plane read nothing.

And we are surprised by chanting death cultists why? As Infidels Are Cool suggests, this might account for cartoons being such a touchy subject.

But that is not my favourite bit. This is:

... according to the study, Americans read an average of 11 books a year, with the average Briton reading eight books.

The people of Islington will no doubt reassure themselves that of those 11 novels, ten have Oprah stickers and one is the latest in the Left Behind series. But still, the news has got to sting.
