Free at last!

Their Marsupial Majesties at the British Columbia "Human Rights" Tribunal have dismissed El-Mo's complaint against Maclean's and voted unanimously to acquit the hatemongers

Congratulations to Mark Steyn, to Maclean's magazine, to the Canadian dextrosphere and to an authentic human right... freedom of conscience and expression.

Related: Kari Simpson is to file a human rights complaint against the BC Human Rights Commission. One way or another, the complaint will be passed on to the British Columbia Supreme Court -- a real court -- for judicial review.

Her complaint is based on seven years’ worth of complaints to the tribunal, all made by Christians alleging religious bias against them—and all dismissed without a hearing.

More comment to follow once I’ve read the thing, but be clear on this: it is no victory to be told by a shadowy government agency that you will be permitted to publish. This ruling only preserves the tribunal from utterly discrediting itself, and as such keeps alive the possibility that some other complainant can drag Maclean’s or any other media organization through yet another travesty half-a-continent away, at great expense of time and money. It also prevents Maclean’s from appealing the tribunal’s decision to an actual court, wherein it might have had the relevant section of the B.C. human rights laws thrown out on constitutional grounds. (Or does it? Can you appeal when you win?)

Update: Five Feet of Fury hands off the round up to Blazing Cat Fur. Sometimes the dextrosphere feels like a barn raising... :-)
