The spirit of resistance

The Supreme Court says Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting in a decision which I gather is the first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history. Rantburg comment takes the decision to task: Self-defense and hunting are fine but they are not the point of the 2nd Amendment. Deacon Blues sums up the problem.

I'll have to read the two opinions but it sounds like the supreme Court has limited the owning of weapons to self defence and hunting, not what the constitution or the framers of the Constitution said. Thomas Jefferson wrote, 'The 2nd Ammendment shall never be construed as to give Congress the power to deprive law abiding citizens of their arms'. He also wrote, 'What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms'.

The sad thing is that Justice Stevens, one of the dissenters, wrote, "...would have us believe that over 200 years ago, the Framers made a choice to limit the tools available to elected officials wishing to regulate civilian uses of weapons.”

The Jefferson quote in your post is just one of literally hundreds of quotes by the Founding Fathers, Screw the PC term "framers", that says exactly that. The entire Bill of Rights is about preventing the government from "regulating" certain behaviours.

How in the name of all that is holy do we get a Supreme Court justice ignorant enough to put a statement like that in a dissent? Surely the Federalist Papers are on the required reading list for Supreme Court Justices.
