The smug appropriation of righteousness

A Calgary Herald editorial points out that despite their defeat in detail - and the popularity of NATO troops - a Taliban remnant has survived. How to account for its persistence?

Part of the Taliban's continued enthusiasm may well be that, for many of these illiterates, religious enforcer was the best job they could ever aspire to, or were ever likely to get. In no other endeavour but upholding their mullah's peculiar interpretation of religion could a thug enjoy the deference bred of fear and the smug appropriation of righteousness for simply thrashing women who showed an ankle, or men who shaved.

One might say the same of Canada's human rights/anti-smoking/global warming racket.

Rosie DiManno interviewed Afghanistan's top spy. He gives a couple of reasons for the persistence of the Taliban. The local Afghan militia were disbanded before a national army was in place. Plus Afghan and NATO forces did not pursue the retreating Taliban into North Vietnam, I mean across the border into their hideouts in the tribal badlands of Pakistan.
