I had to reply to one of the commenters, who said:

“it’s an Aristocracy based on wealth”

Referring to the USA. Here is what I replied (even though it shows up on the site a "your comment is being held in moderation" message appears above it):

Oh for chrissakes, that’s incredibly stupid. And for what it’s worth, Thomas Jefferson (only one of “the founding fathers”) was a plantation owner who also owned slaves, and who though always in debt (because plantations cost a lot of money to run) was considered quite wealthy.

Okay, here is the rest, now visible (on your site "blockquote" seems to think it should be whited out):

One more thing: I remember reading The Stainless Steel Rat and one or two of the sequels back when I was in high school and first getting into scifi, but I didn't reread them. I reread only those authors I really like, not the ones I think merely okay.

Very dissapointing, I too read Harrison many years ago, I bought the books in a second hand
store (they are long out of print, now) It was kind of Butch and Sundance in the far future.The main issue is he's talking about a fascist, well let's say an authoritarian state, in Putin's Russia. A state run by a national security bureaucrat that has killed reporters, has put opposition press out of business, poisoned dissident bureacrats, and engaged in a 'war of choice' in a Moslem land, that has created a generation of jihadists. Yet no one pointed it out.
