War socialism

There is a legion of dolts out there who believe President Bush is preparing a fascist coup. It is difficult to imagine the truefact doublethink necessary to make sense of the world the day the man leaves office. Worse yet, that the legion of dolts calling President Bush a fascist are themselves ideologically fascist but too full of their own righteous fury - too bone stupid - to either have noticed or to care much if it is called to their attention.

As Jonah Goldberg explains, the reason fascism is dangerous is because fascism is popular. Environmentalism, curtailing freedom of speech for the common good, even the shadow of eugenics is still with us and still endorsed by worthy types at the CBC and a multitude of community organizations and social justice activists and human rights commissars. Jonah's segment on Woodrow Wilson in Part Four is particularly telling.

Related: Five Feet of Fury comments on Leo Adler's intervention at yesterday's speech by Ezra Levant at Toronto. Director of National Affairs for the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Canada, Adler worries the Nazis about to take over.

He said it today, getting all Hitler's Willing Executioners on our asses, and no doubt his Center's fundraising appeals say this too: that these "thousands" of "hateful" websites indicate Canada's pending transformation into the Fourth Reich, presumably with suitably Canadian versions of well-known Teutonic trappings, like a Kristallnacht in which the broken glass is dutifully recycled under penalty of death -- in the blue bins, people, not the grey ones! -- and "Lottery Tickets Will Set You Free" signs over the hockey arenas, Tim Hortons and bingo halls cum concentration camps. (Proudly lacking in German efficiency, Air Canada can be relied upon to lose the Jews' luggage on the way...)

As I muttered under my breath: the NDP have never won a federal election, but the Nazis are poised to take over?!

I wish Bush would hurry up with that long-expected fascist takeover -- I've been waiting at least five years for the chance to earn extra money informing on my fellow academics! I'm beginning to wonder if Chimpy McHitlerburton really is as diabolically incompetent as my colleagues say!

My favourite is listening to York profs speculating as to which of their colleagues are secretly in the pay of the CIA. If there is a term beyond "delusions of relevance" I am trying to grasp for it.
