The beclowning of a nation

Roméo "park-bench" Dallaire - an honourable man crippled by circumstance and the cowardice of the government he served - has now shamed himself, his office and his country.

The pending Nuremberg-type trial of an Afghan Canadian at Guantanamo Bay has led a senator to equate Canada and the US with Al-Qaeda for human rights violations. Appearing before a House of Commons committee on international human rights in Ottawa Tuesday, Canadian senator Romeo Dallaire said the US and his own country have sunk to the moral equivalent of Al-Qaeda terrorists in their maltreatment of child soldier Omar Khadr held at Guantanamo Bay.

Such is the propaganda windfall for the enemy press no matter Dallaire's hurried retreat from the clear implication of his own words, saying Canada is Khadr's "only hope" and vowing to "harass" the Prime Minister until we rescue this 21 year old "child" pirate and war criminal. It is not enough we support the Khadr family, Dallaire expects we should free Khadr to continue his jihad.

Omar Khadr should have been summarily tried and shot dead in the field. A belated trial under any conditions whatsoever is far more than he deserves and far less than is demanded by an elementary justice. His apologists should be charged with sedition, tried and hanged until dead. But such is not the law as it stands in what is left of Her Majesty's dominion.
