Thou shalt tell a lie

A post almost too depressing to link but a truth we have to face up to while we still can. Deborah Gyapong points to a brief arguing in defense of the "hate speech" provisions of the Canadian Human Rights Act. The crux of the argument is this: Truth and fair comment are no defense (via Five Feet of Fury).

The source of the brief? Canada's "Conservative" Justice Minister.

I feel like a coup d'etat has taken place and I have awakened to the aftermath.

And this egregious affront to civil rights and to the freedom to speak the truth in Canada is being perpetuated now by the Conservative government.

Woe is us. I have this awful, awful feeling that we're too late. The war has been won by the other side and there are just mopping up operations left, and those that will be mopped up will be those who try to speak the truth in ways that the elite power structure does not like. I no longer think my Tanks t-shirt* is funny. I want to weep into it.

I have a plan to flee to that shining city on a hill, home of the last, best hope of mankind, the United States of America. With a fair wind and God's blessing it will take about 18 months. Events may provide me with an argument for refugee status well before then.

* Link added for context. Via Blazing Cat Fur who has a close-up.

Update: "Shut Up, We Explained" and the Justice Minister's new "50-page b*** j** for Section 13(1)".

I've never sheltered a refugee before; that might be cool. Let me know if you need a place to stay in central Ohio. I might also find layovers for you in Kentucky, Texas and Montana, if need be.

Now thinking I should do a refugee tour en route to wherever I am headed. Could use guidance from the Lords of Kobol.

For promotional/protest purposes, that might make for a delightful series of posts, Flea. I think I might find you some exceptionally sordid hidey-holes to film or photograph your flight/plight around here in upstate NY.

And then you'll magically become a victim! Think of how much money you'll get from your book deal. Whole tens of dollars, I imagine....

The wheels are turning... I have had some excellent, and much appreciated, advice from Flea-readers on how best to proceed. A Rag Tag Fugitive Tour is an enormously appealing idea. Must add VW van or equivalent to the "to do" list for facilitating the project.
